Open Call for Photographer
Project Pressure and The Glacier Trust invite proposals from artists using photography and video to contribute to Project Pressure’s archive. This opportunity will see an artist travel to the Nepalese Himalayas to document glacier research in the region.
Project Pressure is a charity documenting the world’s vanishing glaciers, collaborating with world-renowned artists to create work that will inspire action and participation. The project’s purpose is to launch the world’s first comprehensive crowd-sourced glacier archive hosted on an open source digital platform (MELT), a touring photographic exhibition, and a book publication.
The Glacier Trust provides education and expertise through locally based organisations, our Partners, to enable communities to understand the problems that climate change presents and how to implement solutions.
The selected artist will be invited to join a three-week expedition to Nepal. Starting in Lukla, a town in the Khumbu area of the Solukhumbu District, which is part of the Sagarmatha Zone of north-eastern Nepal, the trek will follow a route to Chhukung.
The selected artist will join a team of students and staff from Tribhuvan University and Kathmandu University, as they study glaciers and permafrost in the region.
The artist would be required to be skilled with a camera in order to accurately capture the expedition’s research being carried out, with powerful and informative images, with videography being desired, but not required.
The selected artist will also be expected to create a body of their own work while on the expedition. Proposals are invited for any project that would be achievable in the time-frame, and deliverable by the end of December 2016.
The work will become part of Project Pressure’s archive and will also be exhibited as part of the travelling exhibition in 2017 & 2018 alongside Simon Norfolk, Noémie Goudal, Mariele Neudecker et al. It will also be used for publicity for the charity. Project Pressure’s archive is open-source for educational, scientific and not-for-profit use; all other rights will remain with the artist. During this trekking expedition over moderate ground, the team will pass many glaciers; Dablam (a hanging glacier), three major glaciers around Imja Tscho Lake, the Imja Glacier (joined by Lhotse Shar and Ambulapcha Glaciers) and the Lhotse Shar Glacier.
The dates for the trek are 12th October – 30th October 2016.
The deadline for proposals is 11th September 2016, 11.59pm GMT.

Project Pressure sponsors Rab will supply the artist with trekking kit.

• A short bio (max 500 words)
• An outline of what you intend to achieve with your own project (max 500 words)
• A moodboard (one A4 page, PDF) with reference images of your work, showing similar photography to what you will create.

This call is only open to established artists, no students. Aged 18 and over, any nationality. There will be no remuneration for the selected artist and no monetary exchange can be made for items provided. Free to apply.
